Matthew Henson was born in the 1860s to sharecropper parents in Maryland and grew up in Washington, D.C. He heard a speech from Frederick Douglass, which inspired Henson to pursue his greatest dreams! In 1909, he, alongside Admiral Robert Peary, made history by being the first to reach the North Pole!
